MARYBOROUGH’S fighting spirit was to the fore in the final quarter of Saturday’s clash with A-grade netball opponent Golden Square on the Princes Park court.


The Borough struck back from a two-goal deficit in the last term to score a crucial 50-48 victory against the blue and gold.

In the race for a finals berth it was a crucial clash as Maryborough’s win meant it joined the fifth-placed Square on 24 points.

Sandhurst’s unbeaten run rolled on as the maroon and blue beat South Bendigo by 36 goals in the clash of the QEO co-tenants.

Down 21-6 at quarter-time, South Bendigo lifted, but the Dragons were too strong in a 75-39 victory.

Gisborne strengthened its claim for the double chance at finals time in a 56-32 win against Strathfieldsaye at Gardiner Reserve.

Eaglehawk and Kangaroo Flat had the bye on Saturday as they were drawn to play Castlemaine and Kyneton respectively.

The Bendigo FNL has a general bye next weekend.

A-grade netball ladder after 11 rounds:

Sandhurst 44 points, 159 per cent; Eaglehawk 40, 143; Gisborne 32, 137; Kangaroo Flat 28, 118; Golden Square 24, 85; Maryborough 24, 79; South Bendigo 16, 74; Strathfieldsaye 8, 51.

A highlight of round 12 on July 14 will be Gisborne against Eaglehawk in the battle of third against second.

South Bendigo takes on Maryborough at Harry Trott Oval in Kennington, and Kangaroo Flat faces Sandhurst at Dower Park.

In other netball matches, Strathfieldsaye plays Kyneton, and Golden Square clashes with Castlemaine.
