Roos lay the foundations in first BFNL season

Broadford's first season in the BFNL was always going to be about more than the scoreboard.

After two years with senior football in recess, the Roos fielded seven teams across football and netball in their maiden BFNL campaign campaign kicking off the season with a standalone match launch against South Bendigo at Harley Hammond Reserve on March 28.

Wins were hard to come by against established clubs, but there were genuine milestones. B Grade netball led the way with three wins and an eighth-place finish, ahead of Castlemaine: a 62–43 victory at Castlemaine in round 8, a 48–36 home win over Eaglehawk the following week, and a 61–30 result against Castlemaine in round 17.

That round 17 home clash with Castlemaine was the club's best day of the year. B Grade won, B Reserve claimed a first win 42–39, and A Grade fought out a 37–37 draw for its first points in the BFNL.

On the football side, the Under 18s pushed Kangaroo Flat all the way at home in round 13, going down by just 11 points (7.9.51 to 9.8.62). The Reserves' best showing came against Gisborne in round 7, and the Seniors' closest result was a 93-point loss at Kangaroo Flat in round 4.

The club also celebrated several individual milestones and achievement including Ebony Heers 300th match and Shayla White being named a finalist in the Bart n Print Rising Star Award. Young-gun, Jabe Brown was also named as an emergency for the BFNL’s Under 18’s Interleague squad.

Looking ahead to 2027, and another big year is in store for the Roos as they embark on their second season as a member of the BFNL. The stakes and expectations will definitely rise but with their bulletproof community spirit, a full compliment of 9 teams and suite of recruits, the vibe is high at Harley Hammond.
