Sandhurst outplays fierce rival on netball court

by Nathan Dole

SANDHURST is well on track to net an A-grade premiership hat-trick after Saturday’s impressive netball victory against Gisborne on the QEO netball court.

Top spot was up for grabs as first took on second in the 17th round of the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football Netball League season.

Earlier in the year it was Gisborne which broke Sandhurst’s unbeaten run in a 53-38 victory at Gardiner Reserve.

This time it was the maroon and blue which fired up from the first pass until the last to score a 55-43 victory.

Even if beaten in next Saturday’s clash on Kyneton’s court, Sandhurst cannot be dislodged from top spot as it’s 25 per cent clear of Gisborne.

In other round 17 matches, Eaglehawk was too strong for Kyneton at Canterbury Park.

The Hawks are fighting to grab the double chance off Kangaroo Flat and played with fierce intent in every quarter against the Tigers.

At the final whistle, Eaglehawk led 58-37.

South Bendigo won a high-scoring match with Strathfieldsaye at Harry Trott Oval in Neale Street, Kennington.

In its last hit-out of the regular season, South Bendigo reached the half-century mark for the seventh time in 2019 as it scored a 50-40 victory against Storm.

The Bloods have a rest in A-grade next Saturday as they are drawn to play at Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve.

South Bendigo will then meet Kangaroo Flat or Eaglehawk in an elimination final on September 1.

The Kangaroo Flat line-up won a tough contest with Maryborough at Barkers Oval in Princes Park.

Third on the ladder, Kangaroo Flat capped its trek to the Magpies’ next by scoring a 59-46 victory.

Golden Square had a rest in A-grade, but took on Castlemaine in the lower grades at Fur Life Vet Oval in Wade Street.

Standings in the Bendigo FNL A-grade netball competition:

Sandhurst 150 per cent, 60 points; Gisborne 125, 56; Kangaroo Flat 147, 54; Eaglehawk 125, 54; South Bendigo 98, 36; Kyneton 86, 26; Strathfieldsaye 84, 24; Maryborough 77, 22; Golden Square 48, 8.

Highlight of next Saturday’s 18th and final round in the home and away series will be at Bendigo Mazda Oval in Dower Park where Kangaroo Flat hosts Eaglehawk.

Castlemaine plays South Bendigo in the lower grades at Camp Reserve.

Gisborne takes on Golden Square at Gardiner Reserve.

Kyneton will try to stop Sandhurst’s hot run at Tigerland in Kyneton Showgrounds.

Strathfieldsaye and Maryborough will be determined to end their season on a winning not when they play at Triple M Park in Tannery Lane.
