Tigers, Magpies keep pressure on South Bendigo netball stars

by Nathan Dole

KYNETON and Maryborough will keep the pressure on South Bendigo in the fight to be fifth on the A-grade ladder in the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football Netball League.

After last weekend’s general bye, the BFNL season resumes this Saturday.

At seven rounds to go, South Bendigo is well-placed to qualify for the finals action.

The Bloods are six points clear of Kyneton and Maryborough.

Defeated just once, Gisborne is favourite to hold top spot from Sandhurst, 8-2, as Kangaroo Flat and Eaglehawk are locked on 34 points and in a battle for the double chance.

A tough run for South Bendigo across the next three rounds is against QEO co-tenant Sandhurst this Saturday, back at the QEO the following Saturday to face Golden Square, and then down to Gisborne’s Gardiner Reserve.

The Bloods are likely to end that run with two defeats and a win.

A superb season for South Bendigo has included a 48-all draw on Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park on Good Friday.

South’s and Eaglehawk’s latest showdown in round 12 was locked on 24-all when play was abandoned because of a flooded QEO court and lightning.

An amazing run of drawn matches for Eaglehawk includes 48-all with South Bendigo in round two, 49-all with Kangaroo Flat at Canterbury Park in round nine, and against the Bloods again.

Kangaroo Flat’s stunning 50-48 victory against Sandhurst at the QEO in round 10 is a sign the Roos are a team to be reckoned with.

Flat heads down the Calder to play at Gisborne this Saturday, but is likely to take the points in home games against Kyneton and South Bendigo, and also at Strathfieldsaye and Maryborough.

A big test for the Roos may be in round 18 when it faces Eaglehawk at Bendigo Mazda Oval in Dower Park.

The ladder-leading Gisborne is at home against Kangaroo Flat, round 12, and Eaglehawk, round 16.

A highlight in the run to September’s finals will be Gisborne against Sandhurst in the 17th round at Queen Elizabeth Oval.

Sandhurst could end the home and away series on a six-game winning streak, although the maroon and blue will be tested by Eaglehawk at the QEO in round 14, and also at home against Gisborne three weeks later.

To be any chance of making the five, Kyneton must defeat South Bendigo at the QEO in round 15, and then take the points at home a week later against Maryborough.

Earlier in the season, the Bloods won at Kyneton by 11 goals, and the seventh round clash between the Tigers and Magpies at Maryborough ended in a 50-50 draw.

Although it cannot make finals, Strathfieldsaye could have a say in who does.

Storm played brilliant netball in mid-June to score a 13-goal win at Barkers Oval in Maryborough’s Princes Park.

The run home for Strathfieldsaye includes at Kyneton in round 14, versus South Bendigo in round 17 at Harry Trott Oval, and home to Maryborough a week later at Triple M Park in Tannery Lane.
