Downpours, lightning affect netball contests
by Nathan Dole
HEAVY rain and lightning forced several of the A-grade contests in Saturday’s 11th round of the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football Netball League season to be called off.
Just two of the four matches went the distance.
At Triple M Park in Strathfieldsaye’s Tannery Lane, Sandhurst led 29-21 early in the third quarter when the match was called off.
Storm had played well throughout the first half, but the visitors were surging clear when the extreme weather began to take its toll.
A highlight for Sandhurst was the 200th game for the versatile Erica Dalrymple-Monro.
Kangaroo Flat dominated its clash with Golden Square on the Roos’ court at Bendigo Mazda Oval in Dower Park.
After a hard-fought two-goal win against Sandhurst the previous round, Roos’ coach Jayden Cowling was wary of a drop-off in the team’s pressure at the contest.
That did not happen as the Kangaroos surged to a 74-11 victory.
The ladder-leading Gisborne won at Kyneton.
Heavy rain made it extremely difficult for all players in passing and catching the slippery netball.
Gisborne marked it’s eighth win of the season in a 34-31 victory at Tigerland.
It was an extremely close tussle between South Bendigo and Eaglehawk at Queen Elizabeth Oval.
The round two match between the teams ended in a draw and scores were locked on 24-all when the umpires called an end to play because of a flooded court and lightning.
It was a rest for Maryborough’s A-grade team because Castlemaine is not fielding a team in the top grade.
The Bendigo Football Netball League has a general bye next weekend.
The season resumes on July 13 when the 12th round is contested.
Match of the day will be at Gisborne’s Gardiner Reserve where the league leaders take on an in-form Kangaroo Flat.
It’s the battle of the boroughs as Eaglehawk faces Maryborough on the Two Blues’ court at Canterbury Park.
Co-tenants at Queen Elizabeth Oval, Sandhurst and South Bendigo do battle.
Golden Square and Strathfieldsaye clash at Fur Life Vet Oval in Wade Street.
Kyneton plays Castlemaine in the lower grades at Kyneton Showgrounds, but the Tigers have a rest in A-grade.
