Important netball duels at Kyneton and Gisborne

by Nathan Dole
THIS Saturday’s A-grade netball matches at Kyneton and Gisborne are a chance for visiting teams South Bendigo and Maryborough to keep the heat on the top five.

Although the home teams go in as favourite, South Bendigo and Maryborough will fancy their chances of an upset in the sixth round.

Win and the Bloods and Pies improve their win-loss records to 2-3 and 3-2 respectively.

A defeat would allow Kyneton to move four points clear of Maryborough and be 10 in front of South.

The match at Kyneton is a danger game for the team in yellow and black.

A highlight of South Bendigo’s season was a 48-all draw against the third-placed Eaglehawk on Good Friday at Canterbury Park.

Bring that sort of form to Tigerland and South Bendigo is a strong chance of victory.

Kyneton has a win and loss at home this season.

It’s an even greater challenge for Maryborough trying to topple Gisborne on it’s court.

In two home matches, Gisborne has defeated Kyneton by 13 goals and Strathfieldsaye by 10 goals.

Maryborough worked hard to score a 46-44 victory in the fifth round at Golden Square, but will need to play a lot better to challenge Gisborne.

The fourth-placed Kangaroo Flat plays Strathfieldsaye at Bendigo Mazda Oval in Dower Park.

The Roos are two points behind Eaglehawk and a loss would be disastrous for Flat.

Despite being beaten, Strathfieldsaye Storm played well to be within 10 goals of Gisborne and 15 of Kyneton in its past two matches.

The Roos look to have too much skill through mid-court and attack.

Golden Square takes on Eaglehawk at Fur Life Vet Oval in Wade Street.

It’s been a tough run for the youngsters representing Golden Square.

The latest hit-out at home was a sign of great improvement as Square was beaten by just two goals.

Eaglehawk is on the rebound from defeat to Sandhurst.

Unbeaten in A-grade, Sandhurst takes another break this round.

Sandhurst will play Castlemaine in the other grades at Camp Reserve.

Standings in the Bendigo FNL A-grade netball competition:

Sandhurst 20 points, 173 per cent; Gisborne 127, 20; Eaglehawk 103, 14; Kangaroo Flat 126, 12; Kyneton 121, 12; Maryborough 83, 12; South Bendigo 6, 84; Strathfieldsaye 74, 4; Golden Square 56, 0.
